"There's no one here. Just the two of us."

"Let's sum up the situation. Normally, we should have received a quest alarm along with our other teammates as part of the rescue team. But…."

Chloe looked at the Hero’s World alarm that only she could see.

[Objective: -]

The blank objective.

Leo was the same.

"So this is an abnormal situation."

"That's right."

After hearing Chloe’s analysis, Leo unhesitatingly placed his index finger on his right temple.

The Hero’s World, composed of the Hero Record, could always connect with the outside world.

"You're trying to contact the outside? That’ll cost us points."

"This isn’t the time to worry about that."

As he focused, a blue light emanated from his fingertip.

"This is Leo Plov. I can’t see any of our teammates. What should I do?"

Despite his question, there was no response.

"...No one is answering?"

"What? That’s impossible."

Chloe, shocked, hurriedly attempted to contact the outside world as well, but she failed.

"This is ridiculous… This isn’t even a Hero Dungeon…!"

Seeing Chloe panic, Leo asked,

"Chloe. Didn’t you notice anything strange when we entered?"

"Something strange?"

"Like, was the entry message different?"

"No, it was exactly as we learned."

Chloe shook her head and placed her hand on her forehead.

"Ugh! What is going on?"

"We can’t just stay here like this."

As Chloe stomped her foot in frustration, she flinched.

"You’re not seriously thinking about clearing the Hero’s World, are you?"

"I am."

"That’s impossible! Even with a team of ten, it’s hard to clear Hero’s World! There’s no way we can fulfill the conditions!"

"You know that just staying put is even more dangerous, right?"

Thirty years ago, Tartarus caused the Chedmurders Incident to eliminate future threats.

The entire forest was now a trap set by Tartarus.

They had no idea when or where danger might strike.

"That’s exactly why we shouldn’t try to clear it! The exam will be stopped soon anyway."

"If they could stop it, they would have already. It wouldn’t be strange if they canceled Hero’s World, but we’re still trapped inside. That means the outside can’t control it."

"No way…"

"Yeah. The only explanation is that this world has become a Hero Dungeon."

A Hero Dungeon.

A rampaging page of the Hero Record.

"I’ve never heard of a case where it wasn’t a Lost Page but an existing page of the Hero Record turning into a Hero Dungeon."

"But what other explanation is there?"

Chloe's face stiffened.

"You know there's only one way to deactivate a Hero Dungeon, right?"

The only way—was to clear it.

Leo’s hypothesis was highly plausible.

Even so, Chloe hesitated.

Despite being a top student, she was still just a 15-year-old girl.

She lacked the experience to make a calm judgment.

"You and I are the best in our first-year class, right? If we plan carefully, we can clear it."

Seeing Leo smile, Chloe clenched her fists.

'I thought I caught up to him.'

Through this midterm exam, she thought she had reached Leo’s level.

But before she knew it, he was already far ahead again.

'And he’s even coming up with a plan. Meanwhile, I panicked and couldn't think of anything…'

Chloe bit her lip and asked,

'Why is there such a gap…?'

"What’s the plan?"

"It’s true that we're lacking firepower and can’t meet the clear conditions."

The Chedmurders Incident had two objectives.

[Rescue the first-years in danger] and [Ensure the safety of the first-years]

The reason Chloe said clearing it was impossible was because of the second condition.

Even if they could somehow fulfill [Rescue the first-years in danger], ensuring their safety was beyond what just the two of them could do.

"So first, we need to strengthen our party’s combat power."

"Strengthen our combat power? If this is a Hero Dungeon, no one can enter from outside. How are we supposed to do that?"

"We’re not the only ones in this forest, are we?"

Chloe's eyes widened as she realized something.

"You mean we should team up with the seniors from 30 years ago?"

"Exactly. If we escape the forest, we can fulfill the safety condition."

"That’s true. But there are demons ambushing all over this forest. Can we really reach them while fighting?"

Chloe had a point.

For Leo’s plan to succeed, they had to break through Tartarus’s encirclement.

"Fighting is risky, especially against demons. That’s why we’ll avoid combat as much as possible."

"Is that even possible?"

"It is. Just trust me."

Leo smiled and knelt down with his back toward Chloe.

"Huh?"

"Get on."

"W-what?! What are you saying all of a sudden?!"

"You’re a mage, so your mobility is low. If I carry you, we’ll move much faster. Plus, a mage needs to conserve energy in situations like this."

Magic was a trump card that could turn the tide of battle.

"S-still, being carried? That means I’ll be touching your… your…!"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about, but we don’t have time to waste. Hurry up."

"......"

Chloe, face bright red, hesitated before reluctantly climbing onto Leo’s back.

"Don’t hold onto my shoulders, wrap your arms around my neck. Otherwise, you’ll fall."

Chloe wrapped her arms around Leo’s neck.

"Here we go."

Kwaak-!

Leo activated Aura Step and leaped forward at an incredible speed.

As she held onto him tightly, Chloe thought to herself,

'In the end, I’m just relying on him.'

She felt frustrated, as if she was no help at all to her rival, Leo.

Fwoosh-!

Meanwhile, Leo focused his mind.

Even if he prioritized mobility, breaking through Tartarus’s encirclement without a fight would be difficult.

But Leo had one method that made it possible.

Aura surged through Leo’s body.

Veins bulged on his temples and all over his body.

His fine hairs stood on end, and his senses sharpened several times over.

Thump-! Thump-!

His heartbeat echoed loudly in his ears.

'Hyper Sense.'

A technique of the great Hero Aron that pushed all sensory functions to their limit by fine-tuning aura.

Of course, compared to the original, it was crude at best.

'That guy’s Hyper Sense wasn’t just about sharpening senses—it allowed him to predict the future.'

But for this situation, this level of skill was enough.

Kwaak-!

Leo stepped onto a branch and dashed through the forest at breakneck speed.

A massive figure, nearly three meters tall, stood still in the middle of the forest.

It was Chubarn, a demon sent by Tartarus to eliminate the seeds of future heroes.

He was staring at multiple floating screens in the air.

Spread throughout the forest, Tartarus’s surveillance network revealed the first-year students of Lumerne.

As he searched for his targets, one screen caught his attention.

"Has the rescue team already arrived?"

Chubarn soon lost interest in the two people on the screen.

He had been ordered to eliminate any interference, but not to actively seek them out.

There was only one objective.

'Eliminate the hero candidates who could become future threats.'

Just as he was about to move to carry out his mission, he saw Leo encountering a monster and engaging in battle.

To Chubarn, Leo and Chloe were just nuisances.

Their presence did not change his primary target.

And yet, Chubarn’s gaze remained fixed on them.

More precisely, his eyes locked onto Leo as he summoned aura, magic, and spirits.

Hatred and hostility burned in Chubarn’s eyes.

Grinding his teeth, he spat out a name as he glared at Leo.

"Kyle!"

***

"Orc pack spotted ahead."

"Got it."

Even if they tried to avoid combat, there were moments when fighting was unavoidable.

This was one of those moments.

Chloe quickly chanted a spell, completing it in an instant.

Three ice spears shot forward in a straight trajectory, aimed exactly where Leo pointed.

Puh-buk-!

"Kraaaagh!"

The orcs, pierced by the ice spears, screamed in agony.

Five orcs collapsed, dead.

But five still remained.

Gwaaaak!

The remaining orcs roared in anger, swinging their crude weapons wildly.

The one at the back reached for a horn at its waist.

Chloe immediately realized what that meant.

'I have to stop it! If I don't, more orcs will come!'

She rushed to cast a spell.

But Leo was one step ahead.

With his right hand, which had been supporting Chloe’s thigh, he let go and drew his sword.

Schling-!

He reversed his grip and threw it without hesitation.

Swish—! Thud-!

"Gwek?"

The sword pierced through both the horn and the orc’s throat.

As the orc fell dead, Leo grabbed the sword handle and muttered,

"Sorry, you might get splattered."

With a rough yank, he pulled the sword free and swung it backward.

Slash! Swish! Crunch!

Leo’s blade carved a deadly arc.

The orcs in its path stood frozen.

Then, as Leo leaped past them—

Puak-!

—they collapsed, bleeding out.

'He's fast.'

Two hours had passed since they entered the Hero’s World.

So far, they had fought seven battles.

'Normally, we should have fought more than twenty times by now.'

Leo hadn't necessarily taken the shortest path.

But for Leo and Chloe, time wasn’t the priority—joining up safely with the first-years from thirty years ago was.

Leo was conserving his strength wisely.

Not once in those seven battles had they fought a demon.

Not once had Chloe needed to get off Leo’s back.

Even though they hadn’t encountered any powerful monsters, Leo had optimized every movement to maximize battle efficiency.

All Chloe had done was follow Leo’s instructions and cast spells.

It almost felt unreal.

She glanced at Leo’s back.

He showed no signs of fatigue.

'The gap in real combat is this big.'

As Chloe bit her lip in frustration—

"Found them."

"Huh?"

She turned in the direction Leo was looking.

A group of students was confronting a band of unidentified figures.

"That’s…!"

The strangers wore black hoods.

"Demons?"

Chloe sensed the ominous aura emanating from them and tensed.

"Chloe."

"Yeah?"

"I need you to cover me."

Leo released the hand supporting Chloe’s thigh.

Chloe quickly chanted the flight spell, Fly.

Seeing that, Leo activated his aura and dived down.

The leading demon, who had been facing the Lumerne students, shouted,

"Prepare yourself, accursed hero candidates."

Fwoosh-!

A silver flash streaked across the demon’s head.

Puwak-!

The demon’s skull split open, and its body crumbled into dust.

"It’s been a while… since I’ve hunted demons."

The remaining demons, startled by Leo’s sudden appearance, hesitated.

"Who the hell are you?!"

"Me?"

Leo smirked coldly.

"The one who’s going to kill you all."
